Chiikawa is a Japanese character franchise created by illustrator and manga artist Nagano. It has grown into one of Asia's biggest pop culture IPs, with dedicated retail stores, frequent merchandise collaborations, and a large following across Japan, China, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Many supporters believe it could eventually become a global brand on the scale of Hello Kitty as its international audience continues to expand.
The official Chiikawa X account has nearly 5 million followers and regularly shares illustrations, short comics, anime updates, and merchandise announcements. Even posts with little more than an emoji often receive hundreds of thousands of likes and millions of views. One recent illustration reached nearly 4 million views and more than 130,000 likes in just four hours.
The franchise has remained active ahead of the release of Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island. The official movie account recently announced a special TV broadcast featuring an in depth look at the film and the first public reveal of creator Nagano's favorite scene.
As Chiikawa gained more attention, it also started appearing on Crypto Twitter. Sling said he had bought 1M CHIIKAWA tokens as a small "moonbag" after initially passing on the project, explaining that he wanted to focus on smaller positions in projects he genuinely liked.
Trader Yogurt has also been regularly sharing Chiikawa illustrations and memes.
Chiikawa launched on April 6, 2026 and reached a new all time high of $2.44M on July 30 as the franchise continued attracting millions of views across social media and more crypto traders began posting about it.
