Alpha Arena (Arena) takes its name from a live AI trading challenge hosted by @jay_azhang on X, where six LLMs - including GPT-5, Grok, and others - each manage $10,000 in real crypto markets. The experiment aims to test how effectively autonomous AI agents can generate alpha returns without human input.
On October 16, Jay Azhang, the creator of the challenge, posted that each LLM had first been given $200 to trade. After a week, Grok led with $1,069, while the collective performance across all bots showed a 77.9% return.
He later shared an update showing that after scaling each LLM’s wallet to $10,000, most were down roughly 30%, except Grok, which reached $12,000.
The interest intensified when Elon Musk reacted to a post praising Grok for being the most “degen trader".
Hyperliquid’s official account later confirmed that the Alpha Arena competition is powered by their platform.
It initially traded around $150K for the first two days and then climbed to about $3M market cap.
