Mei Xiang is a beloved giant panda who lived at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and became an icon in the United States. Born on July 22, 1998, in the Wolong National Nature Reserve in China, Mei Xiang arrived at the National Zoo in 2000 as part of a collaborative breeding and research program between the U.S. and China.
