HairHelpTheOceans (HHTO): HairHelpTheOceans — a meme coin with a mission: to save the oceans and give hair clippings a new purpose! Every year, around 83,000 hair salons in Germany throw away tons of hair that could be used to combat water pollution. This project brings together crypto enthusiasts and environmentalists to support nature in a fun and effective way. Together, we looked for a way to put the cut hair to good use and discovered “hair filters.” We’re inspired by the French organization “Coiffeurs Justes” (Fair Hairdressers) from southern France, which fills old nylon stockings with hair, ties them into rolls, and then uses them as filters in polluted waters. The hair filter’s absorbent properties draw oil out of the water; it is then cleaned and can be reused up to eight times. One kilogram of hair can filter up to eight kilograms of oil out of the water. These hair filters are used worldwide—in lakes and other bodies of water, near industrial areas, and along coastlines—to remove oil, fuel residues, and sunscreen from the water.
