Habibi Gaza (Habibi Gaz): The Free Gaza Movement is an international human rights group founded in 2006 to challenge Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, which it describes as a form of collective punishment on the territory's 1.8 million residents. The group's primary mission is to break the blockade through non-violent direct action, including organizing maritime flotillas to deliver humanitarian aid such as medicine, construction materials, and educational supplies. The movement is registered in Cyprus and has been supported by prominent figures including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and author Henning Mankell. The movement began its efforts in 2008, with the first successful voyage occurring in August 2008, when two ships carrying medical supplies and activists reached Gaza. Between August 2008 and January 2009, five of the initial ten planned missions successfully delivered aid. However, subsequent attempts faced increasing resistance. The most notable incident occurred in May 2010, when the Freedom Flotilla I, consisting of six ships, was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters. The Israeli military stormed the lead vessel, the Mavi Marmara, operated by the Turkish charity IHH, resulting in the deaths of ten people and over 60 injuries. Israel claimed the operation was necessary to enforce its blockade and that weapons were found on board, while the Free Gaza Movement and its supporters maintain that the passengers were unarmed civilians and that Israel's actions were illegal and disproportionate.
