LALA (PENGULALA): In the early 1990s, a Japanese fisherman discovered an injured king penguin entangled in his fishing net off the coast of Japan. The penguin had a damaged beak and wing and was far from its natural Antarctic home. The fisherman brought the penguin to the Nishimoto family in a small coastal town (often associated with Shibushi or similar areas in Japan). The family nursed Lala back to health with care and affection. When it was time to release him back to the wild, Lala refused to leave. He had formed a strong bond with the family and chose to stay with them as a beloved member of the household. To help Lala survive Japan’s hot and humid summers, the Nishimotos installed a special air-conditioned room under their house — essentially turning part of their home into a cool penguin sanctuary. Lala quickly became a local celebrity. Every day, he would waddle through the streets on his own, wearing a small custom backpack (sometimes described as penguin-shaped or orange), and head to the local fish market. There, the fishmongers would give him fresh fish like sardines or mackerel as a treat. He carried his snacks home in his backpack, interacting with neighbors and children along the way who adored the unusual sight. Lala lived happily with the Nishimoto family for about 10 years. He passed away in 1996 due to old age, but his heartwarming story — of rescue, adoption, and daily independent market trips — spread worldwide through documentaries and news reports from the 1990s. Even today, videos and photos of Lala walking to the market continue to charm people everywhere.
