New mini hippo (Nemunemu): Okinawa Children's Country is set to welcome a new member: the mini hippo "Nemunemu" from Nifrel (Osaka Prefecture). As this will be the first time our facility breeds mini hippos, the responsible zookeeper is undergoing training at Nifrel and making preparations for her arrival. The mini hippo is a rare animal, often considered one of the world's three most exotic beasts. While it belongs to the same Hippopotamidae family as the hippos we currently keep, the mini hippo is remarkably petite—about one-tenth the size, weighing around 200-300 kg compared to the 2-3 tons of common hippos. There are also differences in their habitats and behaviors, so by observing both species side by side, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of their unique traits. Currently, only six facilities affiliated with the Japan Zoo and Aquarium Association (JAZA) breed mini hippos, and our facility will be the seventh.
