Oran Mama of Punch (OMP): The doll earned this nickname because of a heartbreaking and heartwarming story involving a baby Japanese macaque (snow monkey) named Punch (or Panchi-kun), born in July 2025 at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan. After being rejected by his biological mother at birth, Punch was hand-raised by zookeepers. To help him develop muscle strength (baby macaques naturally cling to their mothers) and provide emotional comfort, keepers gave him this IKEA orangutan plush. In early 2026, videos of Punch went viral showing him clinging tightly to the doll, dragging it everywhere, and running back to its "embrace" after stressful social interactions with other monkeys. Fans began calling the doll "Oran-Mama" or "Mama of Punch." The story touched so many people that the doll sold out in IKEA stores across Japan, the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
