Vijaya Nandasiri (Senarath): Vijaya Nandasiri (born Ilukpitiya Mudiyanselage Vijaya Nandasiri on 6 May 1944 in Maharagama, Sri Lanka – died 8 August 2016 in Colombo) was one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved and influential actors, known for his work in stage drama, television, and cinema. He was also a singer, producer, and a respected figure in Sinhala performing arts. Vijaya began his artistic journey in theatre in 1966 with the play Vidura-Diva and went on to perform in more than 40 stage productions. Some notable stage dramas included classics such as Maname, Sinhabahu, Kuweni, and Ran Kenda, where his dramatic talent was first widely recognized. He became especially famous for his television roles in Sinhala sitcoms and serials. Audiences loved his comedic characters, particularly Gunadasa Premachandra in Nonawaruni Mahathwaruni and Senarath Dunusinghe in Yes Boss. He also appeared in many other popular teledramas such as Ethuma, Kathura, Sikka, Bhagya, and Class Sinhala Class. In cinema, Vijaya delivered memorable performances in more than fifty films. He appeared in well-known movies such as Sikuru Hathe (for which he won Best Actor), Ran Kevita, Left Right Sir, Sir Last Chance, Sakvithi Dadayama, and Suhada Koka. His versatility ranged from serious dramatic roles to rich comedy, earning him respect from critics and affection from the public. Throughout his 50-year career, Vijaya was admired for his ability to combine humor with deep emotional expression. His influence on Sinhala entertainment was immense, and he helped shape modern Sri Lankan comedy and drama. Vijaya Nandasiri passed away in 2016 due to cardiac arrest. His death was widely mourned in Sri Lanka, and he is remembered as a cultural icon whose work continues to inspire actors and audiences a like.
