SARGENT STUFFY (STUFFY): Back in the trenches of World War I, a stray pup wandered into Yale's training grounds in 1917. The soldiers of the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Yankee Division, named him Stubby for his short tail. He smuggled himself overseas, survived shrapnel wounds, learned bugle calls, warned his unit of incoming gas attacks by barking like mad, sniffed out wounded soldiers in no-man's-land, and straight-up captured a German spy by biting his ass and holding him until help arrived. For his valor, Stubby was promoted to Sergeant through combat — the only dog in U.S. military history to outrank his own handler. General John J. Pershing personally pinned medals on him. He marched in parades, met presidents, became Georgetown's mascot, and lived as a national hero until 1926.
