پهلوی (Pahlavi): The Pahlavi family represents a pivotal era in Iran’s modern history, one of ambitious transformation and rapid modernization that turned the country from a largely feudal society into a emerging regional power. Under Reza Shah Pahlavi (r. 1925–1941), the founder of the dynasty, Iran underwent sweeping reforms: the establishment of a centralized state, massive infrastructure projects like roads, railways, and schools, secular education, judicial modernization, women’s rights advancements (such as unveiling policies), and efforts to reduce the influence of traditional clerical power while promoting nationalism and industrialization. These changes laid the foundations for a modern nation-state. His son, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (r. 1941–1979), continued and accelerated this vision through the famous White Revolution in the 1960s: land redistribution to break feudalism, women’s suffrage and civil rights, literacy and health corps to reach rural areas, nationalization of resources, and rapid industrialization fueled by oil revenues. However, after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the establishment of the Islamic Republic has led to nearly 47 years of profound challenges.
