Vaquita (Vaquita ): Vaquita is the rarest marine mammal in the world and one of the least-studied cetaceans. It’s a small member of the porpoise family that lives only in the northern part of the Gulf of California off the coast of Mexico. What makes it unique Extremely limited range - the vaquita exists in just one small region on Earth. No other cetacean has such a restricted natural habitat. Rarest porpoise species - scientists estimate only a few dozen individuals remain in the wild. Very small size - about 1.5 meters long, making it one of the smallest whales, dolphins, or porpoises. Distinct appearance - dark rings around its eyes and lips look like natural markings or “makeup.” Secretive behavior - vaquitas are shy, rarely surface, and avoid boats, which is why they were discovered only in 1958 and are still poorly studied. Its uniqueness comes from a combination of extreme rarity, tiny habitat, and biological isolation - making it one of the most critically endangered animals alive today.
