MonaCoin is an open source digital currency and a peer-to-peer (p2p) payment network. Dubbed by its creators as “the first Japanese cryptocurrency,” the coin has become somewhat of Japan’s national alternative to Bitcoin or Litecoin. MonaCoin a piece of early-2000s Japanese textboard culture and is named after Mona (モナー), a famous ASCII-art character from the Japanese message board 2channel. Mona is a cat-like creature drawn entirely out of text characters, and the name comes from the catchphrase "omae mo na~" (roughly "same to you"), which the character was always depicted saying in threads.
