No one person is known to have “discovered” the mirror. People have always seen reflections in still water, and the earliest known man-made mirrors were polished pieces of obsidian, a shiny volcanic glass. Archaeologists have found examples from about 8,000 years ago in Anatolia, in what is now Turkey. Over time, people in different parts of the world made mirrors from polished stone and metal. Ancient craftspeople in places such as Mesopotamia and Egypt made metal mirrors thousands of years ago. So the mirror was developed gradually by many people, rather than invented by one named person. The famous words “Mirror, mirror on the wall” come from the Snow White story recorded by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Their German version, published in 1812, begins the Queen’s question with “Spieglein, Spieglein an der Wand”—often translated as “Mirror, mirror on the wall.” The Grimms collected and published the tale; we can’t say for certain that they invented the phrase themselves. Disney’s 1937 film made the scene famous around the world, but the Queen actually says, “Magic Mirror on the wall.” The familiar “Mirror, mirror” wording comes from the older Grimm tale and its translations, while Disney gave the mirror its own memorable name: the Magic Mirror.
