The "Story of Dirk" commemorates an unforgettable and bizarre chapter in Australian wildlife history, where a drunken escapade led to a remarkable encounter between two Welsh tourists and a fairy penguin named Dirk. In May 2012, Rhys Owen Jones and Keri Mules, fueled by a vodka binge, trespassed into Sea World on the Gold Coast. Amidst their chaotic night, they found themselves swimming with dolphins and even releasing Dirk, the penguin, into the wild. Despite their drunken folly, Dirk was eventually rescued and returned safely to Sea World, becoming an unlikely hero of this wild story. This coin captures that moment of unexpected mischief and redemption, with a whimsical depiction of Dirk swimming alongside the two tourists, celebrating the lighter side of an otherwise reckless adventure.
