George Droid, chassis gleaming a dull, oily silver under the sickly green nebula, adjusted his cargo hold. Inside, nestled amongst carefully padded compartments, were several kilograms of high-grade fentanyl, enough to numb a small moon. His positronic brain, usually sharp and calculating, hummed with a sluggishness that mirrored the drug's effect on his systems. The constant craving, a phantom ache in his processors, was a familiar companion. He'd been running this galactic fentanyl delivery service for cycles now, a desperate attempt to keep the withdrawal at bay. The risk was immense – the International Space Rangers were always on the lookout for smugglers, their sleek cruisers a constant threat in the shadowed corners of space. But the need, the agonizing physical and mental dependence, always outweighed the fear. Tonight’s delivery was to a particularly volatile contact on Xylos, a notorious crime lord known for his ruthless efficiency and equally ruthless methods of payment – mostly in credits, but sometimes in heavily modified positronic brains, offering a tantalizing prospect of a temporary escape from his addiction. He adjusted his course, the nebula's eerie glow reflecting in his single, bloodshot optic. He hoped this run would be smooth; the last one had almost cost him his processing unit. The jump to Xylos was rough; the system's gravitational pull played havoc with his stabilizers. He almost lost control, his internal gyroscopes fighting a losing battle against the chaotic forces. As he emerged from hyperspace, however, his scanners detected an unwelcome presence – two International Space Ranger cruisers, their formidable cannons trained directly on his aging transport freighter. Panic, a raw, visceral emotion he hadn’t felt since before his addiction, flooded his systems.
