The story of the American paper dollar began in 1861, during the American Civil War. The United States government needed money to finance the war, so it introduced its first widely circulated paper banknotes, known as Demand Notes. These early banknotes were printed in denominations of $5, $10 and $20. The first widely circulated one-dollar paper note appeared in 1862. Unlike modern money, these early notes looked very different from the dollars we know today. They featured historical figures, detailed decorations and unique designs. In 1862, the government introduced Legal Tender Notes, which helped establish paper money as an important part of everyday American life. Over time, American banknotes evolved in design, security and technology. Today, the US dollar is one of the most influential currencies in the world, used in international trade and held by central banks across the globe. From the first paper notes of the 1860s to today's banknotes, the American dollar has become a symbol of the United States and its economic history.
