Jack In The Box

Jack in the Box was founded in 1951 by entrepreneur Robert O. Peterson in San Diego, California. Peterson introduced one of America’s first modern drive-thru restaurants, featuring a two-way intercom system that let customers order without leaving their cars. This innovation helped change the fast-food industry. The restaurant quickly became known for its distinctive clown-head logo, playful advertising, and menu variety. Unlike many competitors, Jack in the Box offered more than burgers, expanding into tacos, breakfast served throughout the day, chicken sandwiches, shakes, and other items. In 1993, the company faced a major E. coli outbreak linked to contaminated hamburgers. The tragedy led to sweeping changes in food safety across the fast-food industry. Jack in the Box implemented rigorous food safety standards that later became benchmarks throughout the restaurant business. During the mid-1990s, the company introduced its now-famous mascot, Jack, recognizable by his oversized round white head, blue eyes, pointed yellow hat, and red smile. The character became the face of the brand through humorous television commercials and marketing campaigns. Today, Jack in the Box operates more than 2,200 restaurants across the United States and is especially popular on the West Coast and in the Southwest. The brand is known for its late-night menu, Munchie Meals, tacos, and quirky, irreverent advertising style.
