Artist Statement: In The Burden of Play, I seek to explore the dichotomy of childhood innocence and the weight of imagination in a world increasingly constrained by societal expectations. The bovine figure, symbolizing resilience and nurturing, carries the playful chaos of youth—a tapestry of fleeting joy and tangled limbs. The children, etched in unrestrained strokes, embody both the boundless energy of discovery and the precarious balance of trust and independence. The exaggerated, bulging form of the creature represents the swelling, uneven burdens of memory, growth, and responsibility that we all carry, often unknowingly. Through this piece, I invite the viewer to reconsider the fragility of these formative years, where freedom and structure coexist in a delicate dance. Ultimately, the work challenges us to reconcile the whimsical and the monumental within ourselves, as we navigate the weight of our past and the lightness of our dreams.
