Pi Network is a cryptocurrency project launched in 2019 by Stanford PhDs to make crypto accessible to everyone. Unlike Bitcoin, it lets users "mine" Pi on smartphones without heavy hardware or energy use, using a lightweight system based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol. Users earn Pi by logging into the app daily, forming trust circles, and inviting others. It started as a beta, moved to an enclosed mainnet in 2021, and as of today, February 20, 2025, launched its Open Network phase, enabling trading on exchanges like OKX and Bitget. With 60 million users and a 100 billion Pi supply, it aims for a Web3 ecosystem for everyday transactions. Critics question its legitimacy and value, but today’s launch marks its shift to a live, tradable cryptocurrency.
