$WILLIE
The first mascot for a FIFA World Cup was "World Cup Willie," created for the 1966 tournament in England. Representing a lion wearing a Union Jack jersey, Willie became a beloved symbol and set the foundation for future mascots at sports events. The character was designed by illustrator Reg Hoye and quickly gained popularity, appearing on all sorts of products, from toys to clothing. Its success initiated a tradition that FIFA would continue in every subsequent World Cup tournament.
