Nigeria is an awfully homophobic country we learnt a lot about through the members of our group Pink Refugees, whose members come in a very large number from there. There is a law which determines in 14 years prison the penalty for being caught in sexual acts with a same-sex person, but even before the law was promulgated in 2014 being gay, lesbian, trans, bisexual was persecuted to death, with nobody coming to your rescue. In such a social environment, support associations are essential. We got in contact with some, learning how they work under the cover of being something else, like organisations to fight HIV spread or assist marginalized youth. They could endure and work thanks to international projects, mostly financed by USAID. Now, Trump cut 40 billions dollars from those funds, reducing the hope to survive for thousands of LGBT people that thanks to those association were able to find medical and psychological assistance and often a shelter to hide and recover from trauma due to discrimination and violence.
