Meet Another One of Our Medical Marvels: Kaia š In August 2024, 4-month-old German Shepherd puppy Kaia was rushed to our Emergency Department after a terrifying accidentāshe bit into an electrical power bar and was electrocuted for several minutes. Her body became stiff, and she was left critically injured. When she arrived, Kaia was extremely weak, breathing rapidly with low oxygen levels. She had visible thermal burns(burns caused by heat) on her lips and gums, and chest X-rays showed her lungs were filled with fluidācalled pulmonary edema, a serious and often life-threatening condition. Her chances of survival were just 39ā60%. Kaia was admitted to our ICU where she received high-flow oxygen therapy to help her breathe, pain relief, IV fluids, sedation, and antibiotics for her burns. While in hospital, some of the burned tissue in her mouth became necrotic (dead due to loss of blood flow), and surgery was being considered. But Kaia is a fighter. šŖ Over 5 days, she steadily improved and was weaned off oxygen. She went home with her familyāand weāre thrilled to report that her burns healed without surgery! š¾ Today, Kaia is fully recovered, growing strong, and thriving at home. She truly is one of our Medical Marvels.
