The Universal S (also known as the Cool S) is a symbol of unknown origin and meaning, which is widespread internationally and is mainly drawn by schoolchildren. It is precisely because of the largely unknown origin of the symbol and its simultaneous high popularity that the Universal S has repeatedly spread as an Internet phenomenon.The history of the symbol probably dates back to 1973. The universal S consists of two rows of three lines running vertically parallel to each other, the outer two of which are connected with a diagonal line. The two remaining lines are usually also drawn diagonally to the other two connections so that they appear to run behind the shape. There are several variations of the symbol; sometimes the lines are drawn horizontally to form a five, sometimes they run vertically to the base lines to form an eight or the base lines run horizontally to form an infinity symbol at the end.
