The James Webb Space Telescope has discovered a candidate exoplanet for the first time using direct imaging. Webb has photographed exoplanets before, but always of those that had already been discovered. The candidate has been named TWA 7b. The exoplanet orbits the star TWA 7, which is only 111 light years away. The exoplanet is relatively light, only 0.3 times the mass of Jupiter, which is comparable to the mass of Saturn, making it the lightest of all exoplanets discovered using direct imaging.
