# Laika — The Dog Who Went to Space Laika was a Soviet space dog who became one of the most famous animals in history. In 1957, she was chosen to travel aboard **Sputnik 2**, becoming the first animal to orbit Earth. Laika’s mission was designed to study how a living creature would react to the conditions of space. Unfortunately, the spacecraft was not designed to bring her back to Earth, and she died several hours after launch because of overheating and stress. Although her mission was tragic, Laika became a symbol of the early Space Age and an important part of the history of human space exploration. **Laika will always be remembered as the brave little dog who went where no living creature had gone before.**
