The Asteroid Discovered in 2004, Apophis is an S-type stony asteroid approximately 375 meters (1,230 feet) wide, composed primarily of silicate materials with some metallic nickel and iron. It formed in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter roughly 4.6 billion years ago before gravitational interactions altered its orbit to cross Earth’s path. Close Approach: On April 13, 2029, Apophis will pass within 20,000 miles (32,000 kilometers) of Earth, closer than geosynchronous satellites. Nickname: It is often called the "God of Chaos" asteroid due to its mythological namesake.
