The Million Dollar Homepage is a website launched in August 2005 by 21-year-old student Alex Tew from the British town of Cricklade. The guy dreamed of earning money for his studies. More precisely, he was going to enroll in the University of Nottingham on a business management course, took out a student loan, but was afraid that he would have to pay it off for years. What was the gimmick of this project? On his website, the young man launched a grid of 1000 by 1000 pixels - inside there was a whole million of them. On this grid, you could buy space for a link to your site. The price of one pixel was one dollar. The guy wanted to get a million. But space on the site was sold in blocks of 10 by 10 pixels, and not one by one (because in this case it is difficult to see the picture). How it worked: you buy a block of pixels and place a small image on it with an active link to the site. When you hover the cursor, the site's slogan appears. Do you think anyone bought into this? Just two months after the site was launched, Tew said he had sold almost 600,000 pixels to 1,400 clients. In less than six months (in January 2006), all were closed. The last thousand were even put up for auction. The final bid was $38,100. The young man promised his customers that the site would work for at least five years, until August 2010. It is still working.
