An Ottawa County, Michigan, family is grieving their dog after he was stabbed and killed while defending his owner from a stranger. “He died for Paul. He protected him. He’s a hero,” one of the dog’s owners said. Paul and Quaita, who asked to be identified by their first names only, love rottweilers. For the last eight years, Chief was part of their family. “Very protective of us. Even when Paul and I would argue just a little bit or our voices would be raised a little bit, he was like right there between us,” Quaita told Nexstar’s WOOD. “He was a good boy.” The suspect, 23-year-old Jason Varnado, of Grand Rapids, was arraigned Thursday on charges of first-degree home invasion, third-degree killing or torturing an animal and felonious assault. Bond was set at $250,000.
