Thanks to Gen Z, the world “polyester” has a new life as an adjective — and not a complimentary one. A series of recent TikTok comments, which use the name of fashion’s most used fossil-fuel based synthetic fibre as shorthand for something — or someone — cheap, fake or low quality, have now racked up thousands of likes, while videos of creators removing polyester clothes from their closets in search of higher quality options have earned millions of views.
