The Black Hornbill

The Black Hornbill (Anthracoceros malayanus) is a medium-sized bird belonging to the hornbill family (Bucerotidae). It is native to the Sundaic lowlands of Southeast Asia, including Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, Sumatra, Borneo (Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia), and parts of Singapore. This species primarily inhabits mature lowland tropical rainforests. Key Physical Features: Plumage: Predominantly sooty black with a white belly and white tips on the tail feathers. Bill: Large and heavy; males possess a pale yellowish-white bill, while females have a darker greyish bill. Casque: It features a relatively small, ridged casque on top of the bill. Black hornbills are typically observed in pairs or small groups. Like other hornbills, they are known for their distinctive flight pattern and vocalizations, which include deep, growling calls. They play an important ecological role as seed dispersers in their forest habitats. The species is currently classified as Vulnerable due to ongoing habitat loss from deforestation and logging across its range.
