The original Doge dog is Kabosu (also called Kabo-chan), a female Shiba Inu from Japan. She was born around November 2005, rescued from a closed puppy mill/shelter in 2008, and adopted by Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato. Sato named her after the kabosu citrus fruit because of her round face. In February 2010, Sato posted photos of Kabosu (including the iconic one of her sitting on a couch with crossed paws and a side-eye glance) on her personal blog. Those images spread online, got overlaid with colorful Comic Sans text in broken English (“much wow,” “such amaze,” “very doge”), and turned into the Doge meme that exploded in popularity around 2013. The same face later became the mascot for Dogecoin.
