Pnut—a beloved social media star—was confiscated and euthanized by New York officials based on a mere suspicion of rabies, leaving many to ask: Do pets’ lives truly matter? Pnut was more than an animal; he was a cherished companion to his owner, Mark Longo, and a source of joy to thousands. Yet, his life was taken without any alternatives considered. Meanwhile, President Biden’s German Shepherds, Commander and Major, have repeatedly bitten White House staff and Secret Service agents. Both dogs remain at the White House, despite multiple incidents. This double standard—allowing some pets repeated chances while denying others even one—raises important questions about fairness. Today, we honor Pnut’s memory by calling for equal treatment for all pets. Pets’ lives matter—they are family, companions, and sources of comfort.
