Hong Kong Phooey is a classic American animated television series created by Hanna-Barbera and first aired in 1974. The show follows Hong Kong Phooey, a mild-mannered dog named Penrod “Penry” Pooch who works as a janitor at a police station. Whenever trouble arises, he transforms into the self-proclaimed martial arts superhero Hong Kong Phooey. Dressed in a kung fu outfit and armed with his Hong Kong Book of Kung Fu, he fights crime using a combination of martial arts, gadgets, and enthusiasm—although his plans often go hilariously wrong. Despite his confidence, Hong Kong Phooey is usually clumsy and accident-prone. In many episodes, his loyal cat sidekick, Spot, secretly helps solve the case and save the day without receiving credit. The series is known for its humorous action, catchy theme song, and playful parody of the martial arts craze that was popular in the 1970s. Although it originally ran for only one season, Hong Kong Phooey became a cult favorite and remains one of the most recognizable characters from Hanna-Barbera’s golden era of animation.
