Bitcoin’s first name was “Bit Gold”, a conceptual precursor to Bitcoin proposed by cryptographer Nick Szabo in 1998. Bit Gold outlined a system for decentralized digital currency using cryptographic techniques, but it was never fully implemented. The actual Bitcoin protocol, as we know it today, was introduced by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008, when they published the Bitcoin white paper titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.” This became the first functional cryptocurrency.
