đĽłđźâď¸ Boogie on downâitâs red panda Asaâs 11th birthday! This morning, Asia Trail keepers celebrated this âgroovy girlâ with a 1970s-themed birthday party. They painted peace signs on brightly colored boxes and placed them around the red pandasâ outdoor habitat for Asa and her exhibit mate, Chris-Anne, to dig into and enjoy. Each contained some of the birthday girlâs favorite foodsâapples and grapes! . . . đ¤đ§ Asia Trail keepers say Asa is confident and smart. She has lived with several exhibit mates and always seems to be the âpanda in charge.â She is comfortable with who she is and what she wants. Asa has unique relationships with each of her keepers and exhibit mates and makes her boundaries well known. She is smart and a master problem-solver when it comes to cognitive enrichment like training sessions and puzzle feeders. . . . đžđ âWorking with Asa is a lot of fun,â says keeper Trish Jarvis. âShe is always ready for a new challenge, and she learns quickly.â Like many aging animals, Asa has osteoarthritisâa degenerative disease affecting joint cartilage and the underlying bone with associated pain and stiffness. To keep her comfortable, our veterinary team conducts photobiomodulation (laser) therapy treatments along her hips and spine. During the procedure, Asa sits calmly as a veterinary technician massages these areas with a probe. She receives her favorite foods to reinforce her good participation. âTraining her to voluntarily participate in her weekly laser therapy has been a rewarding experience,â says Jarvis. . . . â¤ď¸đ Want to help red pandas? The best thing you can do is to educate yourself, friends and family about these animals, and encourage them to support conservation efforts. Reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle goods to divert waste from landfills. These types of activities help keep the air and water free from pollution, which supports animals worldwide. . . . đˇ Photo credit: Laurie Thompson/Smithsonian
