Fiscus is Latin for a woven basket. The word became the name of the Roman treasury, and from there it gave us "fiscal". One rule: every figure appears twice once where it came from and once where it went and both sides are shown adding to nothing. That is double entry: six hundred years old, invented for exactly this problem, a merchant nobody could check. No balance column exists anywhere in the schema. Every total is summed from the individual legs on each request slower than storing one, and the only reason no figure can drift from the rows beneath it. An entry whose legs do not sum to zero never reaches the database. The function throws. So the book cannot be wrong; it can only be incomplete. Our fee is 2%, taken out of what the vault keeps and never out of what backers are owed.
