Jesse James was an American outlaw born in Missouri in 1847. After the Civil War, he became known for robbing banks, trains, and stagecoaches with the James–Younger Gang. His older brother, Frank James, was also a member of the gang. Stories about Jesse James often turned him into a folk hero, portraying him as a rebel who stood up to powerful institutions. But the popular image of him as a Robin Hood who gave stolen money to the poor is not supported by strong historical evidence. His robberies and violence left real victims behind. James was shot and killed in 1882 at age 34 by Robert Ford, a member of his own gang, who hoped to collect a reward. His life and death became part of the mythology of the American West, inspiring books, films, songs, and stories that continue to shape how people remember him.
