I joined voice chat to trade hard, to learn, to belong. Instead, I got a firing squad of male voices. At first it was “jokes.” Then it was my laugh, my breath, my silence — everything about me became content for them. They talked over me. Talked about me like I wasn’t there. Then they talked at me. Names I won’t repeat. Threats disguised as “banter.” They’d say “mute if you can’t take it,” like abuse was a volume slider I controlled. The worst part wasn’t the slurs. It was the chorus. One guy starts, the rest laugh, and suddenly the whole room agrees I’m less. Less skilled. Less human. Less safe. I stopped unmuting. Then I stopped joining. The scoreboard didn’t care why I disappeared. People say “just leave the VC.” They don’t get it. It’s not one server. It’s the pattern. It’s the dread before you click connect, knowing your voice might make you a target. I didn’t lose a trade that night. I lost the room. I lost the version of me that thought speaking up was enough. But I’m still here. And I’m done being muted.
