For those who don't know, Gorochu is a cutting-room floor Pokemon from the first Generation. It was meant to be the final stage of the Pikachu line, coming in after Raichu. It was scrapped because once the GameBoy cartridge was running out of space and there were already plenty of three-stage families, it was decided to leave Raichu as the final form of Pikachu instead. Once Generation II roled around, there was an opportunity to reintroduce Gorochu among the lineup of new evolutions for old Pokemon, but breeding and baby Pokemon was a hot new thing and they wanted Pikachu to participate, so Pichu was added as the pre-evolution to Pikachu, thus completing the line and leaving no room for Raichu to evolve into Gorochu.
