Shamu was the first orca to perform in a show at SeaWorld San Diego in October 1965. Ted Griffin, a marine “cowboy,” captured Shamu, a young female orca, from the southern resident pod in Penn Cove, Washington, and sold her to SeaWorld after she lived at the Seattle aquarium for two months. Shamu was the park's main performing orca until 1971.
