The Golden Banana ("Sun Belt") is a term referring to a densely populated and urbanized area that stretches between Cartagena in the west and Genoa in the east along the Mediterranean coast. The Golden Banana concept was presented at the European Commission session in 1995 in the Europe 2000 project with the aim of developing sustainable tourism, encouraging the use of renewable energy sources, strengthening interstate relations, promoting economic development and closer ties between Spain, Italy and France. The idea of the "golden banana" was proposed by analogy with the "blue banana", denoting the most economically developed region of Europe.
