Hachiko was an Akita dog born in Akita Prefecture in 1923. He was adopted by Professor Hidesaburo Ueno from Tokyo, who taught at the University of Tokyo. Every morning, Hachiko accompanied his master to Shibuya Station, and in the evening he waited there to greet him after work. However, on May 21, 1925, Professor Ueno suffered a fatal stroke and never returned home. Despite this, Hachiko returned to Shibuya Station every day and waited for his beloved owner to return. This continued for many years, until his own death on March 8, 1935. Thos coin was created in memory of Hachiko.
