The newly discovered fish belongs to the tilefish family, tilefish genus. Tilefish are often found at extreme depths, with some species being found as deep as 600 meters below the surface. Researchers from the Nankai Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, and Ocean University of China used genetic analysis to confirm that this is a new species. Because of its resemblance to the San, the species name was chosen as a sign of respect. "In 'Princess Mononoke,' San is a young woman who is raised by wolves after being abandoned by her human parents. San sees herself as part of the forest and fights to protect it," said Huang Haochen, lead author of the study. "This film delves into the complex relationship between humans and nature and conveys the message of harmonious coexistence between the two. Through this naming, we hope to reflect that message as well." Tilefish is a fish commonly found in seafood markets in East and Southeast Asia. However, its diversity is relatively low, with only 31 species described in the family Ilyxidae and 19 species in the genus Ilyxidae. "It is rare and fortunate to discover a new species in this group, especially one as distinctive as Branchiostegus sanae," Huang said. Only three new species of the tilefish genus have been confirmed in the past 34 years. The specimen was preserved in the Marine Life Collection for further study.
