Ham was a chimpanzee born around 1957 in Cameroon, Africa. He was captured and later brought to the United States as part of the U.S. space program. Ham’s name is an acronym for Holloman Aerospace Medical Center, the facility where he was trained. He became famous as the first hominid to go into space on January 31, 1961, aboard the Mercury-Redstone 2 mission. The flight was a crucial step in testing the safety of space travel before sending human astronauts. Ham was trained to perform tasks during the flight, like pushing levers in response to lights — which helped scientists learn whether a living being could function properly in space. The flight lasted about 16 minutes, reaching an altitude of about 157 miles (253 km). Although the capsule experienced some issues and landed in the Atlantic Ocean, Ham was recovered safely and was in good health. After his mission, Ham became a symbol of space exploration. He later lived at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and then at the North Carolina Zoo, where he died in 1983 at the age of 26.
