Pope Leo XIV (Robert Francis Prevost) is indeed the first Augustinian to be elected pope. He belongs to the Order of St. Augustine (O.S.A.), one of the major mendicant religious orders of the Catholic Church, founded in the 13th century. While there have been popes from other major orders—like the Jesuits (Pope Francis), Franciscans, and Dominicans—this is the first time in history that an Augustinian friar has ascended to the papacy.
