The Mysterious Past of the Bitcoin Logo Did you know that a symbol similar to ₿ appeared as early as 1991 in a video game? In the adventure game Space Quest IV, the fictional currency “Buckazoids” featured a “B” with two vertical lines, very similar to today’s Bitcoin logo. Interestingly, one of the game’s programmers was Hal Finney, who later became one of Bitcoin’s pioneers and the recipient of its first transaction. This has led some to wonder whether the idea for the logo might have come from there. In reality, the Bitcoin logo was created in 2009 by Satoshi and redesigned in 2010 by a user called “bitboy” into the symbol ₿ we use today. The resemblance to Space Quest IV is probably just a coincidence, but it shows how closely Bitcoin’s story is connected to computer culture. The story went viral again in 2025, when someone rediscovered the old game image, sparking new theories about Satoshi’s identity and even time travel. Most researchers believe the logo was actually inspired by the Thai baht symbol (฿). Whatever the truth, this story adds another layer to the myth of Bitcoin and reminds us how technology and culture often intersect in surprising ways.
