A DIFFERENT ANIMAL 🐆 Deep in the forests of Bolivia, researchers noticed something unusual about a small wild cat. Its appearance and characteristics didn’t quite fit the descriptions traditionally used for tiger cats in the region. That observation led to a bigger question: Could Bolivia’s tiger cats be different from those already known elsewhere in South America? To investigate, researchers examined DNA from 38 tiger cats collected across several South American countries, including eight historical museum specimens. The genetic evidence revealed something surprising: what had often been treated as one group was actually made up of five genetically distinct species. Different origin. Different genetics. Different identity. A truly different animal. 🐆
