Cerberus is a creature from Greek mythology, often described as a giant, three-headed dog with a serpent’s tail and sometimes snakes protruding from parts of its body. He is most famously known as the guardian of the Underworld, serving the god Hades. Cerberus's main role was to prevent the dead from leaving the Underworld and to stop the living from entering without permission. Each of Cerberus's heads was said to represent the past, present, and future, or alternatively, birth, youth, and old age. Despite his fearsome appearance, Cerberus was ultimately outwitted by several heroes in myth, most notably Heracles (Hercules), who captured him as one of his Twelve Labors.
