The first decentralized exchange (DEX) in the cryptocurrency space is EtherDelta, which launched in 2016. EtherDelta was a decentralized exchange built primarily for trading Ethereum-based tokens (ERC-20 tokens). It operated by using smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain, allowing users to trade tokens directly from their wallets without needing a centralized intermediary. However, its user interface was somewhat challenging, which led to the rise of more user-friendly DEXs over time. EtherDelta was later followed by other prominent DEXs like Uniswap (launched in 2018), which made decentralized trading much more accessible and became a major player in the DeFi (Decentralized Finance) ecosystem.
